Patio and carport questions
Do I need engineering for a patio or carport?
Almost always, if it needs a building permit. Councils and certifiers ask for structural drawings showing member sizes, footings and tie-downs designed for your wind region. Some small freestanding structures are exempt from approval in some states, so check with your council first.
What do you need from me?
The footprint (length and width), roof type and height, whether it attaches to the house, the site address, and what roofing you plan to use. Photos of the house wall help for attached patios. If you have a brochure or drawings from a patio company, send them.
Can you certify an existing patio?
Often, yes. We work from photos, measurements and any drawings you have. If the structure does not comply we tell you what would need to change. Existing structures are reviewed individually before we confirm the fee.
What does $990 cover?
Engineering for a standard steel skillion or gable patio or carport within common sizes, designed in our online tool. The fee is $900 plus GST. Larger spans, timber, decks, attached structures with unusual connections or existing structures are quoted individually.
