Find your wind region by postcode

Enter an Australian postcode to see the wind region used for structural design under AS/NZS 1170.2, and what it means for your shed, patio or carport.

Four digits. Covers every Australian postcode that has residential or rural addresses.

Postcodes can straddle a region boundary, and terrain (open farmland versus suburbs), shielding by nearby buildings and hills all adjust the design wind for a specific site. Treat the result as a guide; we confirm the design wind for your exact address as part of every engineering job.

What the regions mean

Wind pressure rises with the square of wind speed, so the jump from Region A to Region D is roughly three times the pressure, not 1.8 times.

Region A (A0 to A5)

Non-cyclonic. Most of southern and inland Australia: Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, Canberra. Regional design wind speed in the order of 45 m/s. A0 is the far interior with the lowest design speeds.

Region B (B1, B2)

Intermediate. Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Geraldton and coastal strips outside the cyclone belt. In the order of 57 m/s. Noticeably heavier members and fixings than Region A.

Region C

Cyclonic. Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Darwin, Broome and the northern coasts. In the order of 66 m/s plus cyclonic factors, fatigue-rated cladding and fixings, and heavy tie-downs.

Region D

Severe cyclonic. The Pilbara coast from about Exmouth to Port Hedland. In the order of 80 m/s plus cyclonic factors. Southern kit sheds need full re-engineering here.

Speeds are the approximate regional design values in AS/NZS 1170.2 and are shown for comparison only. Your site's design wind also depends on terrain, shielding and topography.

What to do with your wind region

Wind region is the single biggest input to a shed or patio design. Once you know it, you can sanity-check a kit quote (was it engineered for your region?), understand why a Region C shed costs more in steel, and give your engineer the right starting point. Our guide to Australian wind regions goes into terrain, shielding and cyclonic requirements.
